Pharmacy infrastructure

This team is made up of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians/assistants, nurses, analysts and project/change managers from across VCH, PHSA and PHC.

The team is responsible for ensuring that equipment and processes are in place to support a closed loop medication management system, which is a foundational component of CST and will reduce medication administration errors, improving patient safety.

The team is currently working across VCH, PHSA and PHC sites to upgrade and install automated dispensing cabinets, also known as Omnicell cabinets, in patient care areas. These site-based projects are being carried out now where it is technologically possible, to ensure that renovations, education and changes to workflows can be embedded before the new Cerner clinical information system is implemented. The Omnicell cabinets will ensure secure storage of barcoded, unit-dosed medications, as well as improving inventory management on the units.

The team also expanded and relocated the pharmacy production centre to a new location within VGH, which will enable an increased medication distribution service to all CST pharmacy sites. Centralized packaging and barcoding equipment within this facility and changes to current ordering and distribution processes at some sites will ensure that all medications come in a barcoded unit-of-use format.
