In June 2023, BC Cancer – Prince George was the latest site to go live with CST Cerner – a new, integrated electronic health records system designed to improve the safety, quality and consistency of care for patients and their families across British Columbia.
The Clinical & Systems Transformation (CST) project is a joint initiative of three B.C. health-care providers: Vancouver Coastal Health, the Provincial Health Services Authority and Providence Health Care. Prince George is the second of BC Cancer’s six centres to implement CST Cerner, which now connects it with approximately 40,000 staff and providers across more than 46 sites and 300 clinics in the province.
Patients visiting Prince George will now experience a variety of improvements to the consistency of their care, as well as faster access to treatments and results. Their care teams will follow enhanced medication processes to improve the safety and efficiency of medication management. Visitors to Prince George from other health-care centres using the system will also spend less time repeating medical history during consultations. Now, care teams at the site will have their patients’ up-to-date health records at their fingertips.
Adding another rural facility to CST Cerner will also bring important benefits and access for patients in the region. This includes greater connectivity between BC Cancer – Prince George and other facilities across the province which share the system, such as BC Cancer – Vancouver, Vancouver General Hospital, BC Children's & Women's Hospitals and St. Paul’s Hospital, to name a few.
Further BC Cancer centres are expected to start using the new system in 2024, for the benefit of even more patients across B.C and the organization as a whole. Watch this space.
The overall number of CST Cerner users is now approximately 40,000 across Vancouver Coastal Health, Provincial Health Services Authority and Providence Health Care. Learn more.
